I was reading your post and was hoping you might explain the terms "signature link" and "backlink" and how I can properly use this information to allow the search engines to help pick up my website. I have submitted my website to several search engines but this doesn't seem to be enough in itself to promote it.

Without knowing anything about your site, it is tough to answer this question.
Does you site have any information, service, or product of any value? Is it a real business?
If not, then it is a spam site and I cannot (translated, "will not") help you in that case.
If you do have a legitimate reason for people to visit your site, then there are many ways to promote beyond simple affiliate programs. Some methods include writing articles (assuming you are an expert in the field) and try to get people to notice you that way. Also, advertising on related sites will get you noticed and if your site, service, and/or product is noteworthy, you'll get free backlinks from bloggers and webmasters. The key is that you really have to have something special.
If you simply have a site full of non-sense, google ads, a dating script clone, listing of credit cards, pay-per-click clone, etc; then no one is going to care.
