I wouldn't waste my time with it. You want link popularity, try link exchange.

Sometimes it matters but usually not. You may even find an occasional forum that allows direct links in signatures, but that is rare. The more respected boards (i.e. more important) will not provide direct links to your site from your signature but may allow them in regular posts. That's why they monitor who posts links and where -just like here at GPH.

Actually it does! I have backlink X-Ray Vision and this forum is a Do Follow forum - meaning that search engines are tracing your signature link and counting it as a backlink! And the more quality backlinks that you build, the more traffic and search engine favoritism you'll get!-)

P.S. Nah I really don't have backlink X-ray vision but it's just like I do with the new NoDoFollow firefox add-on you can spot the best backlink opportunities in a flash!!!

I am trying to promote my website. I have started using referral and affiliate links. I also write blogs and articles where I can but just like someone else said, the more reputable sites won't allow you to directly advertise your site.
I was reading your post and was hoping you might explain the terms "signature link" and "backlink" and how I can properly use this information to allow the search engines to help pick up my website. I have submitted my website to several search engines but this doesn't seem to be enough in itself to promote it.

Without knowing anything about your site, it is tough to answer this question.

Does you site have any information, service, or product of any value? Is it a real business?

If not, then it is a spam site and I cannot (translated, "will not") help you in that case.

If you do have a legitimate reason for people to visit your site, then there are many ways to promote beyond simple affiliate programs. Some methods include writing articles (assuming you are an expert in the field) and try to get people to notice you that way. Also, advertising on related sites will get you noticed and if your site, service, and/or product is noteworthy, you'll get free backlinks from bloggers and webmasters. The key is that you really have to have something special.

If you simply have a site full of non-sense, google ads, a dating script clone, listing of credit cards, pay-per-click clone, etc; then no one is going to care.

You know it may help a little bit, but the big thing that you sould remember is that google did not get to number one by being dumb. If they see your site on a crap site like post free ads then you will more than likely loose link popularity for posting on a spam site. Instead why don't you try writing an artilce or contacting a website in your niche and request a link exchange. I know it takes longer but it is a much better way to build your link popularity.

According to what read about it on other forums quoted from google's agents, I think it helps. But they also stated that they take into account
the number of user posts before increasing link popularity.

It helps a lot! Write about you're site, and make it original, do you're keyword research using adwords, it helps to make these articles because people need to find you're site through google if you make good content that people like you and me would search for you should have no problem getting ranked in google for the keyword you want also putting link in you're signature in forums with the keyword you use helps also. Dont just use forums though find straight up articles sites you can post on with good page rank, and you'll be on you're way to gets lots of targeted traffic to any keyword you use.
