Hi Idle,
Mystery shopping is where you are given a budget by a company -let's say: Target or McDonald's- and then you go buy stuff.
You take notes in your head about the service, the product, etc.
When you're done, you leave, go write down your thoughts, and fill out a questionnaire.
In return, you get to shop for free and you get paid for your time.
The reason companies do this is to get feedback on how good or bad their services and products really are. It gives them great insight that they wouldn't otherwise be able to get.
You can pick-and-choose your assignments, but most of the "mystery shopper" opportunities are only in the USA. I've heard of a few in Australia and the UK, however.
Cheers,
Brandon
