I see there are a lot of websites that are in fact paying programs. Let's say you have one (or maybe you really do have one...). How do you promote it?

Sending email messages to everyone is out of the question. At least i think so, because they might report you as spam, since there are already too many scams and people tend not to trust those mass emails.

By banner exchange. I think this is the best way to do it. It`s a win-win situation if you find websites that are willing to do a banner exchange with you even though you`re at the begining. You can also but the link at your signature and post on as many forums you can.

1. Adwords campaigns and other similar. If you have a business plan and some money to invest, it's a good idea to try this too.

2. Other niche sites who'd allow me to place a link/banner (paid or in an exchange)

3. forum posting .. post good quality messages with the link in the siggy. It does drive traffic

4. blog commenting. If there's a blog in my niche, be sure I am there to comment

Of course we start all these after having an wonderfully done SEO job on the site ;)

These are all very good suggestions. In many cases, though, Adwords won't pay for itself, so people should be careful about that one. the others are all very good! :)

Besides what netguy said, i would add subscribing your site in many sites directories. There are a lot of them and i think it's worth the time spent in subscribing your site.

I've always counted on quality content and SEO :D The quality speaks for itself: people will come back on your website, perhaps even write about it on their blog or anything... And Google should be the main referrer...

-writing to similar websites and asking for partnership (link / banner exchange, review posts, and so on)

- if you have been spending many years online, you most surely have lots of aquintances that could help you, either by posting your link / banner on their website, either a recommandation if they have a blog, either tell other friends of them about your business

- writing on specialised blogs and forums, from the same target area. Google search for them, perhaps leave comments on the first 30 websites you find on google after searching for your main keywords.......

I'll come with new ideas soon, I hope

Hi Blair,

While I agree with your post overall, I am not sure how important SEO is nowadays.

I noticed that my top rankings are making just a fraction of what they once were and the traffic -even from G- is dismal in quality. There seems to be a lot of fluff.

In fact, just last night I spent 4+ hours posting a blog about this topic:

Check it out if you have a moment.

Cheers,

Brandon

I think Google is also aware of what you written there, and that's why they've been taking some weird decisions lately (different PR calculations; different way of displaying search results; limiting the click area on commercials ==> bigger costs per click; and who knows what more!). Perhaps the SEO became less important in the past year(s), but I think the necessary steps will be taken to prevent what you wrote there, and to make google traffic more valuable.

If Google is to survive, then you will have to be right! They had better step up and take some steps in a positive direction.

I mean to add... It might be a crazy thought to think Google could ever come crashing down. But, the way I see it, things on the Internet can change overnight.

If Google can pull the plug on my website and make millions of webmasters penniless overnight, don't think the public as a whole can't make Google become obsolete just as quick!

Yes, you're right, even they aren't invincible, but I like to think that they are smarter than that, and won't let such a thing happen  After all , they do have the necesary resources to prevent it... They just have to make the right changes :)

Now let's get back to promoting our websites, cause we are a little bit too far from our initial conversation :D

A nice way to promote a new site is by telling your friends.
You never know how they can react, they might help you spread the word or they could only visit your site and that's enough too :)

Whether you have a new website or a seasoned one it is always a good strategy to give out something for free, that always attracts a great number of visitors and returning users to your website. So here are a few ideas to help you promote your website with free stuff:

- Free report on a certain topics

- Free Ebook

- Free plugin or app

- Free sample product if you have one
