I was looking for a work at home position and got an email response from these people. There was a big red flag because it's a gmail email addy, but I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with them. I can't find their web presence...uh oh. Here's the email I got:
Thank you for your response.
INTRODUCTION
ALTA Information is a subsidiary of ALTA Telephone Systems, which specializes in developing telephone based information systems.
As a customer representative, you will have the flexibility of working at home as long as you are accessible by phone and have an internet connection ready.
YOUR JOB
Once you are approved to be our representative, the phone number that you provide to us will be entered in our system so that when our customers call for information, they will be connected to you. Our system is capable of recording every call and we will monitor the quality of service.
If you are not in a situation where you can answer and help the customers, DO NOT answer the call. We are committed to providing the highest level of service and your lack of commitment will effect our customer, our company, and yourself.
Some examples of your job might be:
1. If someone is lost and needs navigational assistance, you will use Google Maps or Mapquest to guide the customer.
2. If someone wants to know the nearest restaurant, supermarket, or hotel, you will provide them with the appropriate information.
3. Providing traffic or weather conditions
Having easy and reliable access to the internet is critical to this job.
COMPENSATION
You will be paid on a per minute basis. Your starting rate will be ($0.20/minute) which is $12/hr. Since you are working in a minimally supervised environment, you will be promoted once your quality of work has been approved by the manager. Due to the increase in demand for our services, we are constantly looking to promote our independent representatives to a manager with higher pay rate to oversee our operations. Every representative has equal opportunity.
You will receive a check from us every month for your work. Our system logs every representatives received call activities and we will add up the total minutes of the month.
NEXT STEP:
We hope that you will be joining us. However, since we do not anticipate that everyone has the flexibility or ability to meet our demands, we require that you send us the following information so that we can conduct interviews and then have you on our system immediately.
1) Full Name:
2) Phone Number:
3) Address where checks will be sent to:

If there is no website for them I'd stay away. Big RED Flag (we need a smilie with a red flag lol) I mean they have to have some software for you to download so that calls can be routed to you during the time you are working for them. They can't expect you to not answer your phone if you aren't wanting to work KWIM.
There is a thread already about a legit work at home answering phones which pay per minute it's called WorkatHome agents....the company is called Brandont Corporation and I know it's legit my husband worked at home for them for awhile and I worked for their call center and also was going to do it at home.
www.west.com (not a referral link just their home page)
But stay away from that one..sounds very fishy.

Thanks Dawn, you're always so helpful! I have not heard from ALTA in about a week. They haven't responded to a request for more information.
Can you PM me more information about west? I'm checking out the site now, but I'd like to know what kind of work it was, etc.
